Michael Monroe accepts ‘Inspiration’ Award at the 12th Metal Hammer ‘Golden Gods’ in London on behalf of Hanoi Rocksby Tina ~ June 17th, 2014
Michael Monroe, one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most iconic frontman, was presented with the coveted ‘Inspiration’ Award at Metal Hammer’s annual ‘Golden Gods’ event, held last night – June 16th – at Indigo (at the O2 Arena) in London; he accepted the Award on behalf of legendary Finnish outfit, Hanoi Rocks.
Monroe first came to fame as frontman of the ground-breaking group, renowned for their strong song-writing, flamboyant image (onstage and off), explosive live performances and punk spirit; over the years, Hanoi Rocks have come to be recognised as a huge influence on the more colourful / abandoned side of rock, with many of the genre’s biggest names citing them as a prime source of inspiration.
It was fitting that Monroe – currently leading his own band of hand-picked players – should be invited to London to collect the Award (“one of the most prestigious of the evening, only given to those whose role in our world will continue to influence for years to come”); not only is original Hanoi Rocks bassist, Sami Yaffa, still a part of Monroe’s live and recording band, but his touring set continues to feature choice moments from the revered Hanoi catalogue…
Monroe: “It’s really nice to know that, we, Hanoi Rocks continue to have a positive impact on the rock’n’roll scene of today. This award is a great honour and truly appreciated. So, on behalf of Razzle, whose great spirit still lives on, Gyp Casino, Nasty Suicide, Andy McCoy, Sami Yaffa and myself – thank you!”
Monroe is currently playing the European festival circuit with his own band, performing extensively throughout the summer. His current album, ‘Horns And Halos’, is available now via Spinefarm Records.
Dregen´s solo band will appear as Michael Monroe’s opening act on their gigs in Finland at Pakkahuone (Tampere), Tavastia-klubi (Helsinki), Kaivohuone (Naantali) and M/S Viking Grace in April and May. After the Finnish shows, the Swedish guitarist, best known for playing with Michael Monroe, Backyard Babies and The Hellacopters will continue to focus on his solo career.
”It’s been three amazing years in the Michael Monroe band and I’ve been enjoying every second of it! I’m gonna miss this band so much, but it’s time for me to focus on my solo career and future Backyard Babies albums. I hope that I contributed positive energy, great live shows, riffs, dirt, and songs on Horns And Halos that gave Michael Monroe an extra dimension after Sensory Overdrive. This band is so good so they’ll be fine without me,” says Dregen and continues: “I’ll be supporting Michael Monroe with my solo band in April and May. What a great package! What a great show! What a great ending!”
“Dregen and his band opening up for Michael Monroe is a nice send-off and a special treat for the fans,” added Michael Monroe.
Dregen has played guitar in Michael Monroe’s live band since the summer of 2011, and he also played on the band’s latest album ”Horns and Halos”. Replacing him is British guitarist Rich Jones (The Ginger Wildheart Band, The Black Halos), who first appeared with the band on their album release tour last Autumn.
”Luckily Rich, who has done an excellent job as Dregen’s substitute, has gelled into the band’s chemistry so well that the rest of the band welcomes him with open arms as a permanent member. And so the saga continues,” says Michael Monroe.
Between the upcoming gigs and the summer festivals in Finland, Michael Monroe will also be playing in Italy and Spain.

“I’m feeling quite excited about our new ‘Stained Glass Heart’ video. It was shot in Helsinki at an amusement park on a perfectly grey and rainy day, which made it look more like an ‘abusement park’! It turned out very cool and classy” -Michael Monroe
On the live front, MM has revealed plans for an extensive world tour, including Japan, UK and Finland.
“Now that the new album is out, we can finally play the new songs live and create a whole new set-list. That’s why I’m especially excited about the up and coming tour dates. See you all soon down the road!” -Michael Monroe
